Chapter Thirteen

Castana is very upset when I come down to breakfast. She and Gerthan have off from school today, and that would make any kid jump for joy on Earth. But she sits there, playing around with her eggs like she found out her favorite TV show character is fake. Not that she has a TV.

Maalla is at the table, waving her hand around, creating food and getting some dishes cleaned. Dad isn’t home. Probably at the palace. He’s been spending a lot of time there lately, and I know it’s because the Lyrens are moving further south.

I ruffle Castana’s hair. “Morning.”

She barely gives me a glance.

Gerthan beams at me. “Good morning, Ronaaxa. Did Mother or Father tell you you’re watching over us today?”

I gape at Maalla. “Say what now?”

Her face fills with regret. “I’m sorry. Your father told me he would discuss it with you last night, but he must have forgotten. Ronaaxa, I need to travel to Byr to visit my sick aunt. The children are too young to come with me. I was hoping you would watch them.”

Me? Babysit?

“For how long?” I ask.

“Most of the day. Your father is at the palace, and I normally would ask him to watch the children, but things are the way they are now and your father is needed there.”

I nod. “Of course. His job is very important.” I don’t exactly know what he does, but he’s the king and queen’s advisor. When I went to the palace, I saw just how much respect they have for Dad. He can’t lose his job just because I’m too scared to watch over my siblings.

“I can babysit the kids,” I tell her. How hard can it be?

“Really? Thank you, Ronaaxa. My aunt is very sick and I don’t know how much time she has left.”

I wave my hand. “It’s no problem. But don’t you have doctors or can’t you use magic to heal her?”

Maalla shakes her head. “Magic can heal, but at some point there’s just so much it can do. My aunt has been battling this illness for twenty years.”

Maalla gathers some food in her bag before strapping it over her shoulder. She kisses each kid on the cheek, gives me a hug, then flies out of the house.

I turn to the table, where the two kids blink at me. “So…what do you want to do today?” I ask.

“Play outside!” Castana says.

“Race in the competition.”

Castana frowns at him, then covers her mouth as her gaze moves to me. “You said that out loud,” she hisses.

Gerthan shrugs.

“It’s a secret,” she hisses some more.

Gerthan shrugs again. “Ronaaxa is my sister, not my mother. She’ll let me participate in the race.”

I head over to the table. “What in the world are you talking about? What race?”

Castana raises her chin. “He should tell you. He’s the one breaking the rules.”

I pin my eyes on my brother.

He sinks a little in his seat. “It’s not a big deal.” He sighs. “The citizens of Orta gather once a month to race.
